As one of the most visionary and influential fashion designers working today, Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons has consistently defied convention to define and redefine the fashion of our time. In 2014, Kawakubo had a radical rupture with her design process, adopting a method of creation with the intention of “not making clothes” — instead designing “objects for the body” that blur the boundaries between dress and body, fashion and art.
This ensemble from Kawakubo’s Blood and Roses collection in Spring/Summer 2015 is a prime example of her radical approach. The garment features a double layered cape and oversized hood in a palette of visceral reds. On closer inspection, ingenious details like the haphazard cuts of the pattern strips expresses a rawness and reveals the work of the human hand.
