Issey Miyake conducted four collaborations with guest artists for his Pleats Please Guest Artist Series (1996-98). The image on this dress, created by Yasumasa Morimura, combines an inverted photograph of himself with a neoclassic painting—Ingres’ Le Source (1856). Morimura used computer technology to superimpose this image and correct for the distortion that would occur in the pleating process.
The Pleats Please garments are free sized, and when they are not worn, the fabric returns to its two-dimensional form.
